Sarmiza Bilcescu (1867-1935) was the
first European woman to obtain a PhD in Law, and the first female lawyer in her
native county of Romania. She obtained her PhD in 1890 from the University of
Paris, after considerable obstacles in the way of her education on account of

license to practice in 1887, and in 1891 was admitted to the bar association in
Ilfov, Romania. She was active in feminist circles, and founded a society that
pushed for more educational rights and opportunities for Romanian women.
