Sofía Ímber (1924-2017) was a Venezuelan
journalist and patron of the arts, of Romanian origin. She was the founder of the Contemporary Art
Museum of Caracas, the largest collection of contemporary art in Latin America.
She founded the
museum in 1973 and served as its director for almost thirty years.
Additionally, she was an accomplished journalist, the only woman to receive the
National Journalism Prize of Venezuela, and the only Latin American to be
awarded the Picasso Medal by Unesco.
