Lillian Copeland (1904-1964) was a track and field athlete who
also excelled in multiple other disciplines, such as shot put and javelin
throwing. For a very long time (until 2008), she was the only American woman to
win the discus throw event in a modern Olympiad.
She participated in
two Summer Olympics, in 1928 and 1932, winning silver and gold respectively.
She set world records in discus, javelin and shot put, and won the Amateur Athletic
Union championships five times.
