If Thanksgiving is really about the genocide of natives and white people taking over, then why is it on a day where white people and natives helped each other and not on a day where white people killed a bunch of natives?
yes, you are taught in school that thanksgiving is a celebration of the first successful harvest. a harvest that would never have been possible without the kindness and nurture the native americans showed european settlers. but we all know what followed that kindness. it is so extremely twisted to be celebrating when others are still mourning. i’ve heard loads of people say native americans should just get over it, but it is impossible to heal a wound if the knife is still stuck inside. and it isn’t just stuck, the us is still, to this day, slowly twisting that knife. just look at the ever shrinking reservations… look at the mental health and drug abuse issues within native communities. look at the statistics for education and employment. look at the lack of accessibility to clean water and electricity. look at what the us is doing to native americans and please explain how the fuck it’s appropriate to be celebrating this “holiday”.
