There is a difference

supermans-upper-lip:

There is a difference between someone saying something racist, homophobic, sexist, etc and actually being a racist, homophobe, sexist. Hear me out…there is a distinction to be made between someone saying something out of ignorance or even carelessness and someone saying it out of hate. Both are bad but I do believe that there is a huge difference to be taken into account. I think that before making accusations we should take these claims as seriously as they are and ask ourselves “Do I actually believe this person sees a race, sexuality, gender, as superior or inherently above another?” These terms shouldn’t be watered down, they are important and shouldn’t lose meaning (although some would argue that they already have).

nah, this isn’t how it works. if you say racist, sexist or homophobic things people have every right to assume you are a racist, a sexist or a homophobe. sure, people are always learning and we all say or do things we might not realize have a negative connotation but if you are called out on it and you don’t immediately fix it then my friend i have bad news for you.
