Ann Caracristi (1921-2016) was one of the most gifted
codebreakers working for the National Security Agency. Her career spanned more
than 40 years, beginning with reconstructing enemy code books during World War
II.

She was the only woman who served as Deputy Director
of the NSA. For her work, she was awarded the National Security Medal, as well
as the Defense Department’s Distinguished Civilian Service Award.
